Brown on the town

We may be up to our eyeballs in winter, wondering if we will see a warm sunny day ever again or if-in fact-this will be the winter that does us in.  These are the days when we prove what we hardy Midwesterners are made of...although I can't remember at the moment what that is.

Recently I was reminded of an event from a warm summers evening last year.  That was the night a tornado blew through our neighborhood leaving quite a mess and damaged homes behind it.  What I've noticed is a tell-tale sign of exactly which homes suffered damage now that all those homes have been repaired.

It's the color brown.

As I drive through my neighborhood and many neighborhoods in town, it's obvious the brown siding business is in full swing.  The color is on so many houses, I'm starting to wonder if there is a contest or dare involved!  I noticed because I love this grayish, clay-colored brown tone.  At our home, we have reached the we-need-new-siding stage (actually we were there a few years ago but just haven't bitten the bullet yet!) and I was starting to really get into the brown house-vibe.  However now it's gone too far and I fear becoming just another brown house on the block.

Oh well, it's just a silly color of paint, but it's back to the drawing board at our house.

"Kids!  Pick a color!"

Have you noticed too or am I imagining it?  Is brown the "color of the moment?"

Its just like being pregnant. It feels like EVERYONE is pregnant or just had a baby when you start looking around!

I would rather have all the houses in my neighborhood brown then some gaudy colors. I think everyone knows a neighborhood with "that house".
Growing up it was the "Pink House", and we weren't sure why but all us kids would pedal our bikes real fast past it. Maybe we were afraid the Pepto Bismol color would attack.

I think Brown is one of those "neutrals" that you can't escape! You can always do a brown-esque color with a pop of color with shutters, front door or a gigantic statue of a Packer player to help it stand out. Mr. Rodger's Neighborhood indeed.

I agree wholeheartedly. Brown is everywhere. It's a good neutral that can easily be paired with a wide variety if accent colors for trim garage doors, etc. Some shades are more appealing than others. Growing up my family always lived in a white house, anything is more appealing than white in my eyes.

brown? eh... but call it "clay" or "taupe" or "sand" or "khaki" - like what's on my house right now and I love - now we're talking...

I agree that there are worse colors. We had a siding blitz in our neighborhood after a hail storm and we got some not so neutral colors. I tore off blue siding on one house and went with a llovely taupe shade. Personally, I love a Tuscan Beige!

I wonder why. I don't like the color brown at all. Maybe it's just a temporary fix before they have it painted with something more...soft to the eyes. I hope they do that.
