How many work at Mayo Clinic Rochester...?

Often, I am asked how many people work at Mayo Clinic here in Rochester, Minnesota. The number seems to morph depending on whether we're talking about full-timers, FTEs (full-time equivalents), residents or students.

But I received this update from Mayo spokeswoman Kelley Luckstein: "Number of Rochester Mayo personnel, including our residents and students is 32,049," she said.

I asked what the projected percentage increase (or decrease) would be for the year 2010. But Luckstein said Mayo does not do staffing projections "as there are many variables that can affect this during the year."

Suffice it to say that Mayo in Rochester now employs the equivalent of 32,000-plus people in Rochester alone. That's a number nearly equal to one-third of the population of Rochester (100,000 people).

Many of them commute into town daily from surrounding communities. That makes for a lot of stops for groceries, sodas, dinner after work, birthday gifts and flowers along the route. Here's a shout out to the commuters and others who make up this large portion of Rochester's workforce.
