GOP First District Convention, Davis wins

Yesterday's GOP First Congressional District Convention on Saturday in which Mayo Clinic physician Brian Davis was endorsed was surprising in several ways. Never have I been to a convention where the business of endorsing a candidate was wrapped up so quickly. It perhaps wasn't shocking, but it was surprising.
Talking with state Rep. Randy Dammer afterwards, it was clear they had intended to win the endorsement and move forward into the primary and general election.
When Demmer made his speech to the convention, there was a lot of excitement on the stage with the boom sticks and people wearing "Demmer for Congress" hats. But it was all confined to the stage. The response from the convention was flat, with only a few people rising up to applaud Demmer. On the other hand, when Davis gave his speech, surrounded by a lot less paraphernalia, he obviously struck a chord with the audience. Most rose up in a standing ovation. It was the biggest clue that the months of work Davis had spent in cultivating delegates had apparently paid off.

Even though it has already been axed/"X"d by the Gov's over-worked veto pen, I'll add a librarian's two-cents to this by stating that the Chatfield Brass Band Library [a creation really of generations of that can-do small-town's lovers/players of brass bands]really IS a cultural treasure worth supporting with our tax dollars. Sure it may not directly support as many individuals as your typical hockey rink [which I also think are important, to some extent], but that small, specialized collection of Americana is truly one-of-a-kind. Famous people in the history of the American theatre--e.g. Meredith Willson, of "Music Man" fame--have paid visits/homage to it; and for Mr. Pawlenty to ridicule it simply because a DFL legislator is it's champion of the moment is small-minded politics at its worst. --Frank Hawthorne

Kudos to Governor "Pork Buster" Pawlenty for cutting DFL legislators down to size.

Surely the can-do small town's lovers/players of brass bands will step up to the plate and support their creation with their own money. Such a cultural treasure will certainly elicit the appropriate response. Namely, financial support from the community itself.

How peculiar that a post about the GOP's congressional endorsement didn't draw a single comment for almost two weeks.

Now it's been hijacked for a discussion of the governor's veto.

The mistake that Chatfield made was not declaring the library to be a JOBZ project. That's the kind of pork that Pawlenty loves to support.
