Rainn shines in “The Rocker”

Rainn Wilson / The Rocker -- by Chris Miksanek (The Med City Movie Guy)In The Rocker, Rainn Wilson stars as an aging drummer whose credo is “’too loud’ isn’t in my vocabulary,” which pretty much means he won’t be playing at the Whiskey Bones Roadhouse anytime soon.

On the eve of their big break, 80’s hair band Vesuvius unceremoniously jettisons drummer Robert “Fish” Fishman (Wilson). Though he harbors resentment over the next twenty years -- and as many odd jobs -- it’s not a life he’s eager to resurrect ... until he learns that his nephew’s garage band is in desperate need of a percussionist. Apprehensive, they team up and after a happenstance practice video goes viral on YouTube, Fish gets a second chance at the rock god throne.
No one plays dejected like Rainn Wilson. As Dwight Schrute on the popular TV show, “The Office,” he epitomizes “passed over,” a well-honed persona that he successfully brings to the big screen. But he doesn’t carry the film alone. “Curb Your Enthusiasm’s” Jeff Garlin is hysterical as the brother-in-law who vicariously lives the dream and Christina Applegate is the hottie mom who introduces us to the acronym PILTS.
The Rocker is filled with laughs, great music, and an inspirational mantra that we should all hope to chant someday: “Look at me now, day job!”
