Not much to see in 'Mirrors'
In Kiefer Sutherland’s latest thriller, evil is housed in mirrors, puddles and anything else that reflects, giving us enough pause to reconsider an ice rink in Peace Plaza.
After being suspended from the NYPD, Ben Carson (Sutherland) takes a job guarding the burned ruins of an old department store. But when its Mirrors come alive unleashing unspeakable horror on one of his night rounds, he finds an opportunity to put his sleuthing acumen back into action.
Borrowing only the worst from fine films like The Others, Poltergeist and The Exorcist, director Alexandre Aja gives us a rather disturbing piece that reflects poorly on the talents of the popular star of TV’s “24” whose last aversion to mirrors was as a vampire in Joel Schumacher’s far superior, The Lost Boys.
In fact, about the only thing that’ll make you shudder here is the lost opportunity. Its potential to give moviegoers the willies long after they’ve left the theater – especially those who braved the childhood dare to say “Bloody Mary” three times in a darkened bathroom – is squandered when cheap gore substitutes for genuine shock. After the jaw-dropping demise of Carson’s sister, for example, the only thing you’ll see in this mirror is the reality that the summer blockbuster season is clearly over.
