Not a 90-minute CMT version of MTV’s “Rock the Vote.”
What might have otherwise been a disastrous farce starring Jeff Foxworthy or Larry the Cable guy is instead a surprisingly entertaining film.
Costner plays with genuine sincerity the apathetic Bud Johnson, whose Swing Vote will decide the 2008 presidential election (though his precocious daughter is a bit cliché).
Most remarkable is the walk down the center. You might spend your time looking for partisan overtures, but don’t bother. It seemed pretty well balanced (though one side or the other will argue) and each gives as good as it gets.
With hysterical campaign commercials daring to spoof wedge issues like abortion and illegal immigration (though international topics are conspicuously absent) Swing Vote will make you laugh out loud if not squirm a bit in politically incorrect discomfort.
