JM alumni go 'Uptown' at Moga Square

John Marshall High School's Class of 1991 is well represented in a recent commercial real estate deal on Rochester's Second Street Southwest.

Mogsquare:uptownsquareStephen Knaup, a JM Class of 1991 alumnus, bought the Moga Square building at 2001 Second St. S.W. for $1.9 million on April 28 as an investment property and to house a second local office for his professional staffing firm called Hire Investment.

Knaup opened Hire Investment in 2005 and its original office occupies half of the Knaup Endodontics building at 2659 Superior Drive N.W. Dr. Deborah Knaup, who runs the specialty dental clinic, is Stephen's wife as well as a fellow JM grad.

Since he plans to double his Rochester staff to 28, Hire Investment will maintain the Superior Drive office in addition to the new one. Hire Investment also has offices in Arizona, Colorado and New York.

Handling the purchase of Moga Square for the Knaups was Scott Hoss of Paramark Real Estate Services. Hoss also graduated with the Knaups.

Now that he owns the fully leased complex, Stephen Knaup is investing about $200,000 to upgrade the Second Street building.

"We want to class this place up," he said.

The construction, under the supervision of another Class of 1991 alum, Aaron Benike, is expected to be complete in August.

The changes won't end there. In keeping with the move to re-brand the Second Street Southwest neighborhood as Rochester's "Uptown," Knaup plans to change the name on the sign out in front of his new building.

"I'm going to re-name it as Uptown Square," he said.
