Dirt flies @ newly-named 318 Commons

07012010commonsgroundbreaking1 This morning a large crowd of Rochester and University of Minnesota officials and business leaders gathered in front of a big hole in the 300 block of First Avenue Southwest.

They stood in the sun with heavy equipment behind them to ceremonially kick-off the construction of a nine-story building that will provide apartments and classrooms for University of Minnesota Rochester students as well as retail and restaurant space.

07012010commonsgroundbreaking2 Now called 318 Commons, the building is being developed by G.H. Holdings. G.H. is a partnership between Hal Henderson and Grant Michelitz.

After a few speeches lauding the collaboration and partnerships it took to get the project going following more than three years of effort, token shovels of dirt were tossed from a pile set aside for the purpose.

I'll have more on this soon.
