Morrie's Mazda gears up

It has been parked in the back lot for a while, but the now a Morrie's Mazda dealership is ready to roll in Rochester, says Morrie's COO Karl Schmidt.

Mazda_logoApplications for building permits to expand the building at 3800 West River Parkway N.W. should go to the city in the next week or 10 days, Schmidt says.

This will be built in where Quality Auto Sales was at the the intersection of 37th Street West River Parkway.

I'll have more on this later.

Seems a shame that the Domaille building is being torn down when it would have been a turn-key building for Morrie's. The Quality Auto building is small, the lot will be small, and the access turning in and out of there is HORRID.

All this small retail construction news is boring as hell. I'm out of here.

It is the small retail businesses that make the world run. Corporate is boring.

Wrong Sue. It's manufacturing that drives the economy, without which, retail would have nothing to sell.

And it's retail that drives demand, without which, manufacturers would have no reason to make anything.

Wrong again. Retail does not drive demand. Consumers drive demand - retail responds to consumer preferences.

Retailers manipulate and control supply and demand probably more than we realize. In most cases, it's not consumers telling retailers, "I want this" before a product exists, it's retailers creating the demand by saying, "You didn't know it, but you need this new thing". Which is how I ended up with three iPods. :-)

Another example is Disney and its magic "vault". In this case, availability and price are driven by the retailer more so than the consumer. They create an artificial demand by limiting the window for consumers to purchase their movies. Customers who would normally wait for the price to go down are forced to buy Disney's product right away. It's not the same demand as if consumers were left to make their own decision. Demand is front-loaded rather than being spread out over a long period of time.

I question Ken's statement that he was leaving, when 5 hours later he was back.

I'll have a hard time believing anything he says...
