Supporters of Rochester mayoral candidate Cindy Maves continue to complain about how we covered the primary election, with the main photo on the front page of Mayor Ardell Brede and a mug of Maves, under a banner headline that names both candidates.
Here's the latest unsigned note, to our city-county government reporter:
Just wondering why the Ardelle Brede picture is bigger then Cindy Maves picture? Looks like a bias situation on the Post Bulletin part?? HMM...!
There are a few problems with this...it's Ardell, for one thing. And the subject line on the email was "Bradyphoto."
The bigger problem is -- it was totally logical that in covering the biggest and most closely watched local race of the note, which the incumbent mayor won handily, we would use a photo of the mayor receiving congratulations, while also running a pic of Maves and naming both in the headline. If Maves had been the top vote-getter, we would have used a big photo of her. Ditto for Stephanie Kilen, the third candidate in the race; we had pics of all three ready to go.
That makes about a half-dozen email complaints and letters to the editor from Maves supporters. I've heard no other complaints about our primary election coverage from any other candidate.
