Amazing news out of the Mayo-Timberwolves-Lynx announcement today in Minneapolis -- we were there and will update our story with a lot more details later today, but the Star Tribune's online story correctly leads with Block E, a key block in the heart of downtown, being renamed Mayo Clinic Square.
Talk about a giant step into the Twin Cities -- this outdoes anything Mayo might have done at the Mall of America into terms of footprint and branding. Aside from buying the naming rights to Nicollet Mall, the clinic could hardly have attached its name to a more prominent area downtown.
As far as what's going into that complex, that's a whole 'nother matter and we'll learn more about that shortly, but for now, it's an amazing headline. It's also incredible that the clinic and all parties involved were able to keep this under wraps until the Pi-Press' Charlie Walters got a tiny but delicious scoop in his sports column Sunday.
