To S.E. Minnesota media:
You may have received a letter from Steven J. Peplinski, of Mazeppa, who claims to be a "retired special investigator."
The headline on the letter to the editor we received was, "Wabasha County corruption to be investigated."
Without going into detail, it makes stunning allegations, including one that we checked out today with the Department of Public Safety and the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. We hear allegations about corruption in Wabasha County government just about every day from anonymous or unverifiable sources. They lose some of their punch after awhile, especially when they don't check out.
Bruce Gordon, the DPS communications director, said in an email, flatly, "There is no investigation" into alleged "corruption" by public officials in the county.
I thought this might be of interest to some Wabasha County readers, which is the only reason I'm posting this -- if you've heard from Mr. Peplinski that an investigation is underway, he's wrong, according to the DPS.
P-B reporter Brett Boese talked to Peplinski today and said he acknowledged having "a dozen" restraining orders against him for actions related to what he believes is "Wabasha County corruption." I haven't checked those restraining orders out yet.
