P-B 2009 Sports Person of the Year is ...

FELDY: This one was almost a no-brainer once the name was brought up in our sports department.

It's a first for us, a female is our Sports Person of the Year for 2009, which I think is pretty cool. We never set out to pick a male or a female specifically, we just bounce a bunch of names and accomplishments around and do our best to settle on the person we feel is most deserving.

Past honorees include Ed Hruska, head of the Rochester Amateur Sports Commission (2006), Wabasha-Kellogg/U of M wrestler Zach Sanders (2007) and Century/U of M hockey goalie Alex Kangas (2008).

If you subscribe to the P-B, you will be able to read the archived stories on those three by clicking on their names.

Now, onto 2009. We threw out a bunch of names, but the one we kept coming back to is a very deserving winner. The 2009 P-B-Sports Person of the Year is (drumroll ........................):

Maggie McNamara, the former volleyball standout at Zumbrota-Mazeppa, and the two-time NCAA Division II National Player of the Year, and two-time national champion, at Concordia-St. Paul. You can read Paul Christian's profile on McNamara by clicking on her name.
