Poll time (a day late) and Dodge County note

Posted by: Feldman

Sorry, I'm late by a day with the polls.

We'll get to them in a minute, but, first, here's a link to a short article in today's P-B on the state of the Dodge County boys hockey program. It's been a rough season for the Wildcats (2-14-0), but the future is brighter. They have more than a dozen players coming up from a good Bantam team next season and all three of their captains will be back. Here's a link to today's article; you can read the whole thing if you're a subscriber.

Now, onto this week's polls, from Let's Play Hockey magazine.

Lourdes remains No. 10 in the boys Class A poll, while the Red Wing girls fell one spot to No. 9 in Class A. The Mankato East girls held steady at No. 11. The Hermantown boys and Breck girls remain at No. 1 in the Class A polls.

In AA, the Minnetonka boys have moved into the top spot after dismantling the previous No. 1, Duluth East, last Saturday in a Hockey Day Minnesota game. East dropped to No. 2. Lakeville South, at No. 15, is the only Section 1 team in the poll. In the girls Class AA poll, Benilde-St. Margaret's is No. 1, while Section 1 teams Lakeville North (No. 8) and South (No. 10) are in the top 10.

High School Hockey | JM-Mayo rivalry series and this week's Poll Time

Posted by: Feldman

If you're looking for this week's polls, scroll down a bit. But read the rest of this first. Please. Pretty please.

First up, the series of articles and blog posts on the history of the Mayo-JM boys hockey rivalry has been rekindled, which is a good thing, because I have pages and pages of notes that I didn't want to use to start a fire or give Mrs. Feldy's paper shredder a workout.

I had originally planned to run a couple of articles, as well as a series of blog posts, about the rivalry in advance of the first JM-Mayo game this season, back on Dec. 10 (a 4-3 JM win). But, just as I was about to start doing interviews, Mayo head coach Lorne Grosso had to undergo heart bypass surgery. I wasn't about to print articles about this rivalry without talking to the guy who had seen all but two of the games between these teams prior to this season (Grosso missed the games in the 1987-88 season when he was on sabbatical in Italy).

So, here's what's coming:

* In the print edition of the P-B on Friday, Jan. 20, I'll have a front-page article in the Sports section about the rivalry, leading into (hopefully) almost a full page of articles and statistics about the rivalry inside the Sports section. They're running on Jan. 20, because the teams will play at noon the next day during Hockey Day Rochester at Graham Park on the Olmsted Co. Fairgrounds. I'm in the process of interviewing former players and coaches now.

* Starting tomorrow (Thursday), here on the Faceoff blog, I'll recap every game played between JM and Mayo. As I've mentioned before, I spent a good portion of the summer and fall at the public library, going through microfilm, to come up with a few paragraphs about all the games these teams have played. We'll start with the first 10 games between JM and Mayo, tomorrow on the blog and run a certain amount each day (some days maybe less than 10, other days more). We'll have them all covered by the time Hockey Day Rochester is upon us.

POLL TIME

This week's Class A and AA high school hockey polls, from Let's Play Hockey magazine, are below. Lourdes stays at No. 9 this week after losing a well-played game against No. 5 Duluth Marshall, then putting Mankato West on running time last night. Section 1A's New Prague slipped down to No. 20. In Class AA, Lakeville South is again the lone Section 1 team in the poll. The Cougars dropped four spots to No. 15.

First-place votes are in parentheses, Section 1 teams are in bold. (For the record, I don't vote on these polls ... had someone ask me that last week, so thought I'd make note of it here).
