5 posts categorized "Junior A, Tier III National Tournament"

March 09, 2012

PHERSY: The Rochester Ice Hawks return to action this weekend in the biggest series of the season. The Ice Hawks host the Minnesota Owls in the Minnesota Junior Hockey League semifinals. The MnJHL has been granted two bids in the upcoming Junior A, Tier III national tournament, so the two teams advancing to the Bush Cup finals receive bids to nationals.

So yeah, it's all on the line this weekend for the Ice Hawks.

I probably don't need to remind fans of my extreme dislike of the Owls organization, more specifically its ownership. Dislike is a super nice word for what I feel toward that ownership and how everyone is treated in that building. Oh well ... so the Owls aren't a pro organization ... I'll be OK.

Anyway, the Ice Hawks are for the most part healthy. Now if they can get their goalies playing well again, they will be good to go.

OK, so let's go ... here's coach Fatis talking about the upcoming series. The Ice Hawks host the Owls at 7 p.m. Friday. They are at Isanti at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and if needed, they play again at 5:30 p.m. Sunday back here in Roch.

OK, here's coach ...

PHERSY: Well I'm already here at the Recreation Center, but I wanted to do one more quick update with the details (the ones I can think of now) regarding our USA Hockey Junior A, Tier III National Tournament coverage.

First up, there will be free copies of the Post-Bulletin at the rinks each day, so grab one. Feldy and I are all over the tournament. Each day in the paper, our plan is to have a front-page feature, an inside notebook, the Ice Hawk game story, capsules of every game, scores and standings and Feldy and I will choose a forward, defenseman and goalie of the day each day. Watch for that!

Also, twitter ... get after us on twitter. Feldy and I are sitting at the two rinks all day every day, and we're constantly giving updates from every game at the tournament. Feldy is at PBFeldy and I'm at PB_Phersy. Also, every single tweet we post regarding the national tournament will have the hashtag #mnicehawks ... so no excuses, join us on twitter!!! We'll give you the inside stuff that doesn't make the paper!

Finally, regarding the live blog: I will start the live blog for Sunday's 3 p.m. Ice Hawks game against the Queen City Steam. Because the seating is limited for that one, people will likely be turned away, so you'll have the chance to follow your Hawks live here at Check the PB home page 15 minutes before faceoff, and I'll go live with the blog.

VIDEO: Final Fatis interview & nationals details

PHERSY: OK, this is it ... the final video interview before we kick off nationals tomorrow at the Rochester Recreation Center.

But first some important coverage notes.

First off, Feldy and I will be tweeting throughout the tournament. If you're into the twitter thing, follow us for sure (PB_Phersy and PBFeldy) ... all national-tournament coverage will have the hashtag #mnicehawks ... Feldy will be covering the action over at Graham, while I'm with the Ice Hawks. We'll flip-flop on Sunday.

Second, I will be doing the live blog for Sunday's Ice Hawks game at Graham, since I'm guessing not everyone will get in to see the game. Space is limited. Tournament director Ed Hruska addresses this in tomorrow's Post-bulletin. And all the other preview stuff ran today, so grab a copy!

7 p.m. Saturday at the Rec Center: Ice Hawks vs. Walpole Express

3 p.m. Sunday at Graham Arena IV: Ice Hawks vs. Queen City Steam

OK, I think that's about it. Definitely join us on twitter for our amazingly witty tweets throughout the tournament.

That's it, take it away coach:

VIDEO: Ice Hawks defenseman Adam Truex

PHERSY: We're back with more video. I sat down with Ice Hawks defenseman Adam Truex to talk about the national tournament and his thoughts about playing here at home in Rochester.

Don't forget: Follow me on twitter!!! PB_Phersy ... also, during the Ice Hawks games at nationals, I'll include the hashtag #mnicehawks for all my post (unless they get too long ... like GOAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

One video left to come tomorrow, and that's with coach Nick Fatis.

If you plan to attend the national tournament, you definitely should pick up a copy of Thursday's Post-Bulletin. There's a preview on the front and then a full page of coverage on the inside.

OK, now time for Truex ...

VIDEO: Ice Hawks defenseman Nick LaRue

PHERSY: Well, today I was out at Ice Hawks practice again, wrapping up my interviews for national tournament previews, which will continue to run every day this week in the Post-Bulletin.

I caught up with a few team members (and coach, of course) for some video interviews. Today, enjoy a talk with Ice Hawks defenseman Nick LaRue.

A couple of things I wanted to note regarding national tournament coverage. First up, PLEASE FOLLOW ME ON TWITTER ... PB_Phersy ... I will be tweeting during the games. There will be no live blog for Games 1 and 2, because frankly, you better be at the Rec Center if you're an Ice Hawks fan.

However, Sunday, I will start the live blog at I know that some people will not be able to get into the game because space is extremely limited at Graham Arena IV. So, live blog starts Sunday, and I'll continue the blog after that as long as the Ice Hawks are still playing ... Monday and Tuesday, I'll be on there if the Hawks are alive.

OK, back to the video. Enjoy Mr. LaRue.
