High School Hockey Tonight ... sort of / Feb. 11, 2012

Posted by Feldman

It's late (or early, depending on how you want to look at it), Baby Feldy is finally full and snoring and I'm typing this post on my phone, so we won't give you the usual game previews today. Instead, we'll look briefly at what today's games mean to each of the Rochester teams.

I'm heading up to Lakeville for the Mayo girls Section 1AA semifinal game agwainst Lakeville South, so the roundups of today's boys games probably won't hit PostBulletin.com until Sunday sometime. Best of luck to the Spartans girls -- aqnd Dowdge County, which plays at Lakeville North in the other 1AA semqifinal today.

Today's games:

* Century at Mankato East (noon): Century can probably get off the bus sleepwalking and win this one, but the motivation for the Panthers to play well should be obvious: If they win, the 4 points they earn in the Big Nine Conference standings will boost them into first place. It also means they win a Big Nine title of they can beat rival Mayo on Tuesday.

* JM at Owatonna (1 p.m.): The Rockets are out of the Big Nine title picture, so they need to focus on improving each day, with the postseason coming in just more than a week. This game serves a couple of purposes for JM: 1) The Rockets can build on the momentum their offense generated in a 6-0 win at Winona on Thursday, and 2) They can gain a ton of confidence from beating a conference title contender (not to mention JM would officially end Owatonna's title hopes with a win). As it looks right now, JM will be the No. 6 seed in the Section 1AA playoffs and will stay in Rochester to face either Mayo or Centry, both teams that JM has beaten this season. A win today would solidify that spot and help JM avoid one of the Lakeville schools in the section quarterfinals.

* Lourdes at New Prague (2 p.m.): The Trojans have more to gain with a win today than No. 9-ranked Lourdes does. Lourdes has the top seed in Section 1A sewn up. New Prague will likely try to make an argument to be the No. 2 seed, even though it has lost to rival Northfield twice. The section is a jumble of similar teams after Lourdes, and a New Prague win would strengthen its argument for a high seed. These teams have played some wildly entertaining games over the past four years. I expect another close one today, and odds are they'll meet again in the postseason.

*Mayo at Faribault (7:30 p.m.): Like Century, Mayo needs a win today to keep control of its own destiny in the Big Nine and in seeding for the Section 1AA tournament. Mayo has shown in recent games that it can rely on mote than one line to produce offense. They need to continue that today, getting scoring from throughout the lineup, to carry some momentum into Tuesday's showdown game against Century.
