New $1.3 million gym at Longfellow in the works
Longfellow Elementary students, get ready for a gymnasium clear of lunchroom tables and chairs.
Citing safety concerns about the current gymnasium at Longfellow
Elementary School, the Rochester School Board on Tuesday night
unanimously approved a nearly $1.3 million plan to build a new school
gym.
The construction costs will be funded through a combination of dollars
from the alternative facilities and operating capital budgets, as well
as by using lease-purchase borrowing funds. The funding will not affect the general fund, meaning that the
construction does not add to the school district's plans to cut $4.5
million this year. The new gym will be 4,830 square feet, nearly double the size of the
current gym. It will be located on the back end of the school, which is
the southwest side. The current gym would be developed into a
multi-purpose and music room.

I've also included a link to the construction plans, as well as a list of how gym space compares in the district.
