Ring in the new year with Free First Thursdays

DECORAH, Iowa — Vesterheim Norwegian-American Museum announces Free First Thursdays in 2012, free admission with a special event on the first Thursday of each month, sponsored by Decorah Bank & Trust Co.

On Jan. 5, Vesterheim invites everyone to “Martyrs, Monsters, Magic” an Open House to view the “primstav” murals in the Amdal-Odland Heritage Center. Martha Griesheimer, Vesterheim’s Volunteer Coordinator, will be on hand to answer questions about the “primstav,” or Norwegian calendar stick, and how it inspired a room full of paintings. Light refreshments will be available.

“The Norwegian painter Sigmund Aarseth depicted so many interesting stories and traditions in these murals,” Griesheimer said. “The Gathering Room is a unique space that everyone should see," she added.

Local filmmakers present: "The Perspective of Love"

Co-directors Landon Brands (l) and Nate DeBoer (r) with a poster for their film “The Perspective of Love”Local filmmakers Landon Brands and Nate DeBoer have packed a lot of story-telling in their new short, “The Perspective of Love.” DeBoer penned the script based on a short story he wrote a few years ago and with Brands and some RCTC film students, they assembled a movie that is as insightful as it is original (and unpredictable). A real joy, and I would say that even if it wasn’t chock full of local talent and locations.

“The Perspective of Love” premiers Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at 7:00 pm at Paragon Chateau 14 Theater. For more information, visit
